How to Grow Agrimax Red Onions:

  • Planting Location: Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Red onions prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0-7.0) and thrive best in rich, loamy soil with good organic matter content.

  • Sowing the Seeds: Start seeds indoors about 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost date, or sow directly outdoors once the soil temperature reaches around 55-75°F (13-24°C). Plant seeds about ¼ inch (0.6 cm) deep in rows, spaced 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart.

  • Transplanting: If you started seeds indoors, transplant the seedlings outdoors when they are strong enough to handle, and the danger of frost has passed. Ensure they are spaced about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) apart for optimal bulb development.

  • Watering: Water regularly, ensuring that the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Onions need plenty of water, especially during dry spells, but avoid excessive moisture that can lead to rot.

  • Fertilizing: Onions benefit from a balanced fertilizer. Apply a slow-release fertilizer before planting, and supplement with nitrogen-rich fertilizer during the growing season to encourage healthy leaf growth and bulb development.

  • Weeding and Mulching: Keep the onion bed weed-free by regularly removing any weeds around the plants. Mulch can be applied to help conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed growth.

  • Harvesting: Red onions are typically ready for harvest when the tops begin to yellow and fall over, which is usually around 100-120 days after planting. Gently pull the onions out of the soil, and allow them to cure in a warm, dry area for a week or two before storing.

  • Storage: After curing, store red onions in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. When properly stored, they can last for several months.
